Techniques for Adaptive Estimation of E ective Bandwidth in ATM Networks
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper examines the e ectiveness of adaptive algorithms for estimation of e ective bandwidth in ATM networks. Large deviations results for constant capacity single server queues are used to derive a basic e ective bandwidth result which is applied to a linear representation of the input process giving the e ective bandwidth as a function of the cumulant generating function of the innovations, QoS, mean arrival rate and bu er size. The algorithm is tested by simulation using the least squares lattice algorithm for estimating the linear process coe cients for a range of input processes. The e ectiveness of blocking and truncation of the input process on the algorithm is investigated.

Towards Self-Learning Adaptive Scheduling for ATM
In this paper we discuss ongoing efforts at Scientific Systems towards the development of e$ective strategies for traf ic management of ATM networks using SelfLearning Adaptive (SLA) techniques. We extended our previous SLA techniques to bursty trafic patterns and show how an approximation to SLA, called proportional feedback, can be used to manage real-time variable bit rate ATM trafic. متن کاملPreserving Bandwidth Using A Lazy Packet Discard Policy in ATM Networks
A number of recent studies have pointed out that TCP's performance over ATM networks tends to su er, especially under congestion and switch bu er limitations. Switch-level enhancements and link-level ow control have been proposed to improve TCP's performance in ATM networks. Selective Cell Discard (SCD) and Early Packet Discard (EPD) ensure that partial packets are discarded from the network \a...
متن کاملResource Management in Wide-Area ATM Networks Using Effective Bandwiths
This paper is principally concerned with resource allocation for connections tolerating statistical quality of service (QoS) guarantees in a public wide-area ATM network. Our aim is to sketch a framework, based on e ective bandwidths, for call admission schemes that are sensitive to individual QoS requirements and account for statistical multiplexing. We begin by describing recent results appro...
متن کاملE ective Bandwidths for Multiclass Markov Fluids and Other ATM Sources
We show the existence of e ective bandwidths for multiclass Markov uids and other types of sources that are used to model ATM tra c. More precisely, we show that when such sources share a bu er with deterministic service rate, a constraint on the tail of the bu er occupancy distribution is a linear constraint on the number of sources. That is, for a small loss probability one can assume that ea...
متن کاملEffective bandwidths: Call admission, traffic policing and filtering for ATM networks
In this paper we review and extend the e ective bandwidth results of Kelly [28], and Kesidis, Walrand and Chang [29, 6]. These results provide a framework for call admission schemes which are sensitive to constraints on the mean delay or the tail distribution of the workload in bu ered queues. We present results which are valid for a wide variety of tra c streams and discuss their applicability...
